What is Prayer of supplication and what does it involve? (examples)

A supplication is a form of prayer in which a person asks God for help, support, guidance or intervention in a particular situation. This type of prayer is common in many religions and belief systems and can take various forms and rituals.

Components of a supplication

A typical supplication may contain the following elements:

1. invocation: the address or greeting to God.

2. gratitude: expressing gratitude for past gifts and blessings.

3. confession of sins: Confession of faults and request for forgiveness (common in many traditions).

4. petition: The specific petition or request to be made.

5. declaration of faith: Expression of trust in God's wisdom and goodness.

6. conclusion: A conclusion that often ends with an expression of hope and trust and praise.

Examples of prayers of petition

Christianity:

1st Lord's Prayer (a widely used Christian prayer that includes supplications):

"Give us this day our daily bread; and forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us; and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil."

2. personal prayer:

"Dear God, please help me to stay strong during this difficult time. Give me the strength and courage to overcome the challenges that lie ahead. Amen."

Islam:

1st Dua (personal supplication):

"O Allah, I ask you for guidance, righteousness, chastity and independence."

2nd Dua al-Istikhara (prayer for decision making):

"O Allah, I ask you for good through your knowledge and I ask you for strength through your power and I ask you for your great favor. For you are able, but I am unable, and you know, but I do not know, and you are the Knower of hidden things."

Judaism:

1st Amida (the Eighteen Supplications prayer or Shmone Esre):

"Heal us, O Lord, and we will be healed; help us, and we will be helped; for you are our glory. And bring perfect healing for all our ills, for you, almighty King, are a faithful and merciful healer. Blessed are you, Lord, who heals the sick of his people Israel."

2. personal prayer:

"Lord my God, help me to make wise choices and to walk my path in accordance with your will."
